Is the Handwriting on the Wall?

It would appear that handwriting is fast becoming a lost art. Perhaps it already has. Does this matter? This is certainly not unexpected given the options of keyboard entry and voice input. Be all of that as it may, a comeback of sorts could be on its way. Click here for the details.

  1. Interesting to hear about a study that suggests it may be beneficial for children to learn to write letters freehand -- first-- before tracing or typing. Also, some pretty high-powered science academic vocabulary practice-- e.g., "left fusiform gyrus," "inferior frontal gyrus," "posterior parietal cortex." Thanks :-)

  2. An interesting read. In my 25 years as an educator (at present, 5th grade), I have found that reluctant writers get motivated on the keyboard. Their thoughts are more organized and they show the inclination to support their work with adequate details.
I worked as a first grade teacher about 4 years ago and I used the keyboard for letter recognition. Students who were struggling in this area were more receptive to technology. So, in reading this article, I am a little uncertain with the findings. I respect the field of Science and hope that further studies will help to clarify these findings.
