Our children need more exercise. This is made quite clear by the quantitative information contained in this article. How can we as educators help to reverse this trend among children in today's society?
"But in practice, this recommendation probably requires the active participation of parents or other authority figures." I agree with this statement from the article. Over the years, as an educator, I have become more aware of being a role model for the students in promoting a healthy lifestyle. At the ages of 10-11, I get an impressionable group of students. In order to develop a responsible attitude towards what they eat and how much they work out, each year I establish extra-curricular Clubs. The students organize and participate in their actions for the club. The focus is promoting awareness for themselves, their class as well as their school and home community. In addition, I encourage students to bring a healthy snack/breakfast to school, to have in the morning. Finally, I make every attempt to have Period 1 as a walk/run/stretch session. The end result is that everybody is happy!
